Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to change my software because of e-invoices?
Not necessarily. The important thing is that your invoicing or accounting program supports electronic invoicing and connection to the Peppol network. The Financial Administration recommends checking with your software vendor on how it will support the e-invoice.
I am not a VAT payer—does this apply to me?
Yes, but mainly from the perspective of receiving e-invoices. From January 1, 2027, entrepreneurs and companies that are not VAT payers will also have to be able to receive electronic invoices. The obligation to issue e-invoices from this date applies mainly to domestic VAT payers for selected B2B and B2G transactions.
What is Peppol?
Peppol is a secure European network for the electronic exchange of business documents. For e-invoices, it works similarly to digital mail—it ensures that an invoice in a standardized format is delivered from the sender to the correct recipient.
Does this apply to every invoice?
No. From January 1, 2027, the obligation applies primarily to domestic transactions between business entities and between businesses and public administration. Invoices issued to regular consumers are not affected by this regime. Cross-border transactions are scheduled to be included in the system later.
What if something goes wrong during the sending?
E-invoices will be delivered through certified delivery service providers via the Peppol network. The system is designed to allow electronic documents to be securely sent and received and their delivery to be tracked.
When should I get ready?
Ideally, as soon as possible. The mandatory system will take effect on January 1, 2027, so it’s a good idea to check as early as 2026 whether your invoicing or accounting system supports e-invoicing and how you will set up your digital mailbox.
How much will an e-invoice cost me?
The price will depend on the delivery service provider and your billing or accounting system. The Financial Administration states that free versions of solutions are also available on the market.
